Even if a business already has an online presence, it still makes sense to create
a web community. For one thing, many important search engines no longer offer
free web site submissions or listings. Want to be listed with Yahoo in the US?
It costs almost $500 per year. Interested in the Go Network? Another $500 per
year. And the sad fact is that paying these fees does not guarantee listing.
Real people visit these submitted sites in order to rank them. Small sites— even
beautiful ones— may be considered too esoteric or marginal, so they won’t
be listed in the directory or search engine. The corrollary is that diversity
makes promotion easier. To provide one example, reciprocal links with other web
sites are important because they send potential customers directly to your web
site. But few people realize that the number and quality of links leading into
a site are a major factor used by many search engines in determining relevancy.
The fact is that large, popular web sites have a far easier time securing important
reciprocal links. As web communities grow, it’s possible to request links
from web sites that run the gamut— from soup to nuts!
